NTWU Canteens
About NTWU Canteens
The history of NTWU Canteens dates back to 1981 when the canteens were under NTUC Catering. The canteens which were located at bus terminals and depots of SBS Transit and TIBS were operated by NTWU. In 1987, the 28 canteens were named NTWU Canteens.
From 1987 to 2010, the number of NTWU Canteens island-wide burgeoned to the present 34. Besides providing convenient and low-cost food and beverage for its members, NTWU Canteens embarked on an initiative to provide healthier food choices to its workers. In early 2008, NTWU collaborated with Health Promotion Board to train the canteen operators on cooking methods for healthy food options which contain less fat & salt. The initiative was a huge success and all of the 34 canteen operators are now certified with the Healthier Caterer Award conferred by HPB.
All of the NTWU Canteens have been awarded national certification for skills under the Food & Beverage Workforce Skills Qualification (WSQ) system, aimed at raising the service standards and upgrading the skills of food operators in the F&B industry. The system is a joint effort by Workforce Development Agency and National Environment Agency.
Our canteen vendors have completed courses in Customer Service, Stall Display and Food Hygiene, and are accorded the WSQ Statement of Attainment for all three courses.
Modules Cleared:
WSQ Interact with Guest
WSQ Stall Display
WSQ Food Hygiene (Basic)
NTWU sees its Canteen Service as a welfare service for its members. Other than serving its members, the canteens are also open to the public too. NTWU’s philosophy of giving extends to its canteen operations -- whatever surpluses which are generated by the canteen operations are spent on members’ social, sports and welfare events, May Day activities, donated to welfare organizations, or are re-invested to generate better returns.
